I staged this home in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood of South Austin to be converted to a short-term rental. Near the famous Barton Springs natural pool, I wanted the space to reflect the laid back vibe of the neighborhood so I created layers of comfortable elegance with casual design paired with some unconventional pieces—there’s a repurposed fish nightstand in one of the bedrooms! The owner requested an eclectic look that reflected the spirit of South Austin. I staged the home progressively as we sourced furniture, and used pieces from my own collection to create interesting rooms for guests. I sourced vintage, antique, and unique items from all over Central Texas. I found the dark wood block stools used on the patio of this home in Round Top, Texas at the Fall Antiques Show. I used bedding sourced from Oaxaca to incorporate some of the Mexican influence that can be seen in Austin and throughout Texas. For the bedrooms I brought in vintage framed artwork that was hung in my boutique on South Congress Avenue. The mirrors over the vanity in one bedroom were found at Uncommon Objects in Austin and hung in an “uncommon way.”

My favorite part of the design of this space is the Mexican art hung in the kitchen. I used a few pieces from my personal collection to create a collaged gallery wall over the dining table. But the stars of the show are the hand-carved Guatemalan animal masks that hang on the side of the kitchen cabinetry. These pieces are even available for guests to purchase during their stay!

I loved working on this project because there’s room for the space to change over time, depending on what the clients and their guests are looking for from their accommodations in Bouldin Creek. The pieces we found are unique to the home and the casual design we went with lets these pieces stand out while creating a comfortable place for guests to come back to after adventures out and about in Austin.
